SloIron® is an innovative iron designed to deliver the ferritin-iron complex naturally found in legumes. The iron is protected in a protein shell—inside this protein cage, the iron is organized in a bionanomineral called ferrihydrite (Fe2O3H2O). Unlike traditional non-heme iron, which can be harsh on the gut because of the way it is absorbed, this form of iron uses a unique absorption mechanism that minimizes gastrointestinal discomfort while being bioavailable.
Iron deficiency is currently one of the most widespread nutritional concerns worldwide, affecting nearly a third of the global population and contributing to broader health and productivity challenges.1 Despite this, many consumers find traditional iron supplements difficult to tolerate due to poor taste, limited digestibility, and gastrointestinal discomfort—all factors that lead to low compliance.
SloIron® provides a more natural and tolerable approach to iron supplementation. It uses ferritin—the body’s own iron storage protein—to deliver iron in a stable, bioavailable form. Encased within a ferritin “cage,” the iron remains protected as it travels through the digestive system and is absorbed intact through receptor-mediated endocytosis. Once inside intestinal cells, the iron is released gradually, ensuring gentle, sustained absorption. The result is improved tolerability and better consumer compliance for those seeking to safely restore healthy iron levels.

In a 9-week randomized, double-blind trial involving 38 premenopausal women with menstruation-induced anemia (Takeda et al., 2023), participants who took SloIron® showed significant improvements in hemoglobin levels, red blood cell quality (MCH and MCHC), and serum ferritin compared to placebo.
Earlier research has further validated ferritin-iron as an effective plant-based iron source. In a randomized crossover study of 16 mostly non-anemic women, iron from soybean ferritin was absorbed as efficiently as ferrous sulfate (Theil et al., 2006), confirming comparable bioavailability.
Additional research on rats and 73 healthy women (Theil et al., 2012) demonstrated that ferritin-iron absorption remains consistent even in the presence of competing iron sources, indicating a distinct and regulated uptake pathway.
Preclinical safety studies (Lampe et al., 2025) confirmed that SloIron® is non-mutagenic, non-clastogenic, and well-tolerated in vivo, establishing it as a safe, low-toxicity iron supplement with a high NOAEL (No Observed Adverse Effect Level).
SloIron® is a flexible, plant-based iron solution suitable for a range of applications, giving formulators the freedom to create consumer-friendly, iron-enriched products across formats:
